In April of 1940, German SS officers were brought to the Russian side, and allowed refugees with proper documentation to enter back into the German occupation of Poland. The family walked across this bridge to enter the German side and take the train back to their home in Bochnia.

Is there a reason why the Germans never entered the Monastery to look for refugees? I know with Anne Frank, the room they stayed in was not visible from the front of the building. Was this the case with where your family was hidden or were they left alone because it was a religious refuge? ( I know that might not make sense considering Hitler's beliefs, but I know for a while some churches were safe havens in the beginning.....

Hey Deb. The monetary my family stayed in was on the Russian side of the river, and under Russian occupation. The Soviets mostly arrested landowners and suspected saboteurs, so the refugees were left pretty much alone. The arrangement between Germany and Russia to occupy Poland was tenuous. Eventually, Hitler invaded Przemysl and they arrested and murdered more of the populace, mostly the Jewish citizens. Fortunately for my family, they sensed danger and left Przemysl before this time, and returned to their home under German occupation. Not ideal, but probably a fortuitous move given the historical events that followed.
